The Tennessee State Board of Education has announced that Dr. Sara Heyburn will replace Dr. Gary Nixon as the Board’s Executive Director. Fielding Rolston, chairman of the state board, said “the board was impressed with Dr. Heyburn’s leadership in key areas over the past years. We also have been impressed with her ability to build consensus among different education groups and her willingness to meet with and listen to all stakeholders.” Dr. Sara Heyburn joined the State of Tennessee in July 2010 on the heels of the state’s successful Race to the Top grant as K-12 policy advisor in the Governor’s Office. Since November 2011, she has served as Assistant Commissioner of Teachers and Leaders at the Tennessee Department of Education where she directs and oversees policy and implementation related to increasing teacher and leader effectiveness. Before joining the state, Heyburn worked for two years at Vanderbilt University as a policy analyst with Dr. Matthew Springer at The National Center on Performance Incentives. Heyburn began her work in education as a high school English teacher and cross-country coach in Nashville, TN. In 2007, she earned her National Board Certification in Adolescent English Language Arts. Heyburn has a BA in English and a MAT in Teaching Secondary English, both from the University of Virginia and an Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. Looking to Learn Something New?
