According to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, corporate sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments. Sustainability practices have gained momentum in recent years, with more and more companies adopting strategies that will allow them to head into the future in a clean and green way. The PA Chamber is proud that sustainability has become a cornerstone of many of our members’ day-to-day operations. This issue of Catalyst spotlights several companies that are making a concerted effort to reduce their environmental footprint as they plan for the future. For example, you’ll read about Knouse Foods’ awardwinning recycling and waste reduction program; of UPS’s efforts toward reforestation and using alternative fuel sources; and of SUEZ’s recent $32 million investment in an innovative technology water treatment plant near Bloomsburg University. These are just a few of the stories in this issue that showcase what the private sector is doing to incorporate sustainability as a way of improving efficiency and achieving energy cost savings — a win-win for companies, consumers and the environment. It’s also important to note that while companies often face the economic hardship of having to comply with an onslaught of new regulations, they work toward sustainability under no directive but their own. They understand the value in “greening up” their operations — not only to benefit their financial bottom line, but to ensure that they are leaving a positive environmental impact on their communities. In our advocacy efforts, the PA Chamber has always sought to ensure that when new laws are enacted, they strike the balance between achieving environmental protection and economic growth. At its core, sustainability is based on this philosophy as it creates and maintains conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, while fulfilling the economic, social and other requirements of present and future generations.
